Havel’s Place

Washington, Lisbon, Dublin, Barcelona, Tel Aviv, Venice, Oxford and... Olomouc. What do these cities have in common? In all of them you will find a Havel’s Place, a memorial site dedicated to the Czech playwright and first president after 1989. This worldwide project was designed by Czech architect and designer Bořek Šípek. Havel’s Place in Olomouc is symbolically located on the university grounds, as Václav Havel was the first ever post-Soviet recipient of an honorary doctorate from Palacký University.

The table and chairs, symbolising democratic openness to dialogue, can be found in the courtyard of the Terezian Armoury, housing the impressive university library today. You can sit on the chairs and contemplate or debate with a cup of coffee from the popular Coffee Library next door.
